Dealing with several injured players, including star midfielder Darlington Nagbe, the Timbers clung on to a 1-1 tie against Atlanta United on Sunday. The game kicked off to a slow start for both the Timbers and Atlanta United, with no one scoring in the whole first half.
After the half, both teams came back refreshed and ready to play. Then, in minute 46, Atlanta made their move. Julian Gressel scored from just outside the box, giving Atlanta a 1-0 lead over Portland. However, just four minutes later, Portland responded. Heading the ball in on a free kick, defender Liam Ridgewell scored his first goal of the season and tied the game up.
Both teams continued to fight to get that second goal, however, despite Atlanta dominating possession and the Timbers turning up the heat at the end of the game, neither team was successful. Although Portland did come pretty close to a goal in those last few minutes, including a 90th minute power shot off the post by Guzmán, the final score remained at 1-1.
Next up, the Timbers will take on Montreal Impact on Saturday at noon, while Atlanta will play Houston on Saturday at 4:00.
