SANTA MONICA – Atlanta United beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Saturday, giving them their fourth home win in a row.
Although Atlanta dominated possession for the entirety of the match, the first half started off a bit slow, with neither team scoring for the duration of it.
However, when second half started, Atlanta came back even more fiercely, getting off promising shot after promising shot. Then, in minute 67 they finally scored. Brandon Vazquez passed the ball to Martinez, who slid through Colorado’s defense and scored the only goal of the match. There were a few good saves by both goalkeepers throughout the rest of the match, but the game ended with Atlanta winning 1-0.
Atlanta United, who is currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, have not shut out another team since their tie to the Seattle Sounders at the end of March. So, “the clean sheet was a big step for us, it’s been a while since we’ve had one,” defender Michael Parkhurst said in a press release.
“We feel like some games we’ve been good enough to get a clean sheet and it hasn’t happened for whatever reason and other games we have rightfully given goals and made some mistakes. To come out here in front of our home fans in a tough game where Colorado made it very difficult defensively, we knew that we had to be tight in the back. We knew it was probably going to be a one goal game,” he concluded.
Next, Atlanta United will play Miami FC at 4:30 on Wednesday, and Colorado Rapids will face off against FC Dallas Tuesday at 5:00.
