The San Jose Earthquakes signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Matt Bersano. Bersano started his collegiate career playing at Oregon State where he earned Pac-12 Second Team Honors and set the schools record for most saves made in a single season.
He then turned down playing with the USL’s Real Monarchs in favor of transferring to Penn State to earn a master’s degree. There, he played one season as a Nittany Lion and graduated to play the 2016 season with the Seattle Sounders. He spent the 2017 preseason as a trialist with the Quakes, who are now eager about signing him.
“We are very excited to add a talented young player that has shown a strong interest in our organization,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a press release. “He will be a valuable addition to both San Jose and Reno 1868 FC this season.”
