SANTA MONICA – The Portland Timbers were defeated 2-1 by the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday night in the fourth round of the US Open Cup.

It was a rough game for the Timbers from the beginning.  In just the third minute of the game, Aaron Kovar received a cross in front of the goal line and easily redirected the ball into the back of the net, giving the Sounders a 1-0 lead.

The Timbers, however, equalized the game in minute 37. Rennico Clarke received a corner kick from Ben Zamanski that he then attempted to head into the goal.  Augustine Williams, with a header of his own, redirected that ball into the back corner of the goal, and tied the game up 1-1.

Going into the second half, the match was still tied up 1-1.  However, just 7 minutes into the that half, a handball was called inside the Portland Timber box.  Zach Mathers took the penalty kick and scored for the Sounders putting them up 2-1.  That was the last goal of the match and the Sounders took home the win.

Next, the Seattle Sounder will take on NYC FC on Saturday at 10:00 AM and the Timbers will face Colorado at 6:30 on Saturday.
